A Morning of Adventure, Imagination and the Most Wonderful Curls

Some children arrive at a session a little shy.

Others arrive ready for adventure.

This lovely little boy was definitely the second.

From the moment we met, he was full of energy, imagination and ideas. Before long, trees had become invisibility stations, the grass had turned to lava, and the blanket we laid down became a safe place where he could escape from danger.

It was one of those sessions where we spent most of the morning laughing.

Turning Play Into Memories

One of my favourite things about Childhood Storytelling Sessions is finding ways to bring out a child's personality.

Rather than asking children to stand still and smile at the camera all morning, I use games, prompts and little adventures to help them relax and have fun. It's amazing how quickly children forget about the camera when they're busy avoiding lava or trying not to get caught by Dad.

This little boy fully embraced every game we came up with.

At one point he discovered that touching certain trees made him completely invisible. Naturally, this became a very important skill that needed testing several times throughout the session.

I can confirm it worked every time.

Chased by Dad and Baa Baa

Every great adventure needs a bit of excitement.

For this one, that came in the form of Dad and our trusty puppet sheep, Baa Baa.

There was plenty of running, lots of laughter and more than a few dramatic escapes. Some of my favourite photographs from the morning came from these moments. Not because everything was perfectly planned, but because they captured something real.

The joy.

The excitement.

The pure fun of being little.

Those Little Details Parents Never Want to Forget

Of course, amongst all the running around, there were quieter moments too.

The cheeky grin when he realised he'd escaped.

The look of concentration as he planned his next adventure.

And those curls.

Honestly, I think they might have been the most impressive head of curls I've ever photographed.

As much as I love documenting the play and connection, I always make space for a few beautiful portraits too. The kind that show off all those little features parents adore and want to remember forever.

The images that end up framed on walls long after childhood has passed.

Why I Love Photographing Childhood

Children see the world differently.

A field isn't just a field.

A tree isn't just a tree.

Everything has the potential to become part of a story.

I love creating sessions that give children the freedom to explore, imagine and have fun, whilst capturing both the adventure and the quieter moments in between.

Because years from now, it won't just be the photographs that matter.

It will be the memories attached to them.

The games they played.

The things they believed.

The way they saw the world.

And this little boy gave us plenty of those moments to remember.

FAQ

Where do childhood photography sessions take place in Lincolnshire?

Sessions take place outdoors across Lincolnshire, including woodland, wildflower meadows, parks, and meaningful locations in areas such as Grimsby, Barton-Upon-Humber, Lincoln, Cleethorpes, and the surrounding countryside.

How long does a childhood photography session last?

Childhood photoshoots usually last around 45 minutes, giving children plenty of time to relax, explore, and be themselves without pressure.

What age are childhood photography sessions suitable for?

These childhood storytelling sessions are designed for children from around 6 months (once babies can sit confidently) up to approximately 8 years old. They’re perfect for capturing this beautiful stage of early childhood, from curious babies and toddlers through to playful, expressive young children, all in a relaxed outdoor setting.

What if my child doesn’t want to pose?

If your child doesn’t want to pose, that’s absolutely fine, there’s no pressure at all during the session. I take time to help them feel relaxed and comfortable first, often using bubbles, toys, and gentle interaction so they can settle in naturally.

As they warm up, I use a mix of playful prompts and light direction to create both natural moments and more gently posed portraits, including simple setups where they feel happy and at ease. The goal is always to capture their personality in a way that feels relaxed, enjoyable, and true to who they are.
