Welcoming a new baby into your family is such a special time, and being able to capture those very first days together is something I feel incredibly lucky to do.

I recently met this lovely family in the Lincolnshire Wolds, near Louth, for an outdoor newborn photography session, capturing their first photographs together as a family of three.

From the moment we began, it was so clear just how loved this little baby was. There was something so lovely about seeing Mum and Dad with their newest addition, taking in those early days together and beginning this next chapter of their lives.

Alongside the photographs of them together, I wanted to capture all those tiny details that change far too quickly. The little hands and feet, delicate eyelashes, tiny lips and all the things that make a newborn baby so wonderfully small.

And, of course, we couldn't leave out the cuddly toy goose that Dad had brought along for his little boy. It was such a personal touch and a lovely reminder that the most meaningful photographs often include the little things that make a family uniquely theirs.

A Different Approach to Newborn Photography

When most people think of newborn photography, they probably picture a studio, carefully arranged poses, little knitted outfits and a baby curled up in a particular position.

And while there is absolutely a place for that style of photography, my approach is a little different.

I photograph newborns outdoors, surrounded by the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside, creating a mixture of simple, natural newborn portraits and photographs of the whole family together.

I still love the opportunity to create those beautiful portraits of your baby on their own. I use a lovely basket with soft blankets to make a comfortable little space for them, allowing me to photograph their tiny features and the details that change so quickly.

But I don't want your newborn session to feel like a series of elaborate poses.

Instead, I keep things simple.

I make sure your baby is comfortable, settled and positioned safely, with their little face visible, and let them be exactly as they are.

There is no need to make them look like somebody else's idea of a perfect newborn photograph.

They already are perfect just as they are.

Sometimes the most beautiful photograph is simply your baby resting peacefully in their basket, with the softest light falling across their face.

Sometimes it's a close-up of their tiny fingers or the delicate curve of their eyelashes.

And sometimes it's a photograph of you holding them, looking down at this little person who has changed your world in ways you couldn't quite have imagined.

All of these photographs have a place in your gallery.

Together, they tell a much fuller story of those first days.

Newborn Photography in the Lincolnshire Countryside

For this session, we spent our time in the Lincolnshire Wolds, near Louth.

It's one of the things I love most about photographing families outdoors. The countryside gives us room to breathe, beautiful natural surroundings and a setting that feels very different from a traditional studio.

There's something lovely about bringing your newest family member into the landscape around you, surrounded by the places where you'll make so many more memories as they grow.

The scenery doesn't need to be complicated, and it doesn't need to take centre stage.

It simply provides a beautiful backdrop to the people who matter most.

The result is a collection of newborn photographs that combines those carefully considered portraits of your baby with natural family images, all created outdoors in the countryside.

It's a style that feels timeless without feeling overly formal, and beautiful without losing the little things that make your family unique.

And, of course, the photographs don't have to stop at your baby.

I want you to be able to look back at your gallery and remember what it was like to be there together, at that particular moment in your lives.

The landscape, the light, the tiny baby in your arms and the feeling of those very first days.

All of it belongs to your story.

A Beautiful Beginning

Looking back at this session, what stays with me most is the feeling of love that surrounded this little baby.

The way Mum and Dad held them, the little details we captured and even the cuddly toy goose that made the photographs so personal to their family.

It was such a beautiful reminder that newborn photography doesn't have to be complicated to be meaningful.

We don't need elaborate setups or a collection of carefully arranged poses to create photographs that you'll treasure.

We simply need to pay attention to the things that matter.

Your baby, just as they are.

The way you hold them.

The tiny details that will change before you know it.

And the love that already fills your family.

These are the things I want you to remember when you look back at your photographs years from now.

Because one day, this little baby won't be quite so little. Those tiny hands and feet will grow, your arms will have to stretch a little further to hold them, and these first days together will become part of your family's story.

But you'll still have these photographs.

A reminder of where it all began.

And I think there's something rather beautiful about that.

FAQ

When should I book my newborn photography session?

It's best to get in touch during pregnancy if you're hoping to book a newborn session. This gives us time to chat about your plans and make arrangements around your baby's expected arrival.

Once your little one has arrived, we can confirm a suitable date based on how you're both doing and when you're feeling ready to venture out.

If your baby has already arrived, please don't worry. You're still very welcome to get in touch, and we'll see what we can arrange.

How old should my baby be for an outdoor newborn photoshoot?

Newborn sessions are lovely during those first few weeks, when your baby is still so tiny and everything feels brand new. However, there's no need to worry if your baby is a little older than that.

My approach isn't about fitting your baby into a particular pose or achieving a specific look. It's about capturing them as they are, along with the connection you share as a family.

Whether your baby is a few days old or a little further into their first weeks, we can create a beautiful collection of photographs that celebrates this special time.

Is outdoor newborn photography safe for my baby?

Your baby's comfort and safety always come first. Outdoor newborn sessions are planned carefully, with suitable conditions and a comfortable environment in mind.

I use a basket and soft blankets for simple newborn portraits, with your baby carefully supported and positioned comfortably. I won't force them into complicated poses or ask them to hold positions that aren't natural for them.

We also take the weather and temperature into account when planning your session. If conditions aren't suitable for your baby, we'll discuss rearranging rather than pushing ahead.

What happens if my baby cries or needs feeding during the session?

Absolutely nothing to worry about!

Newborns need feeding, changing, cuddles and reassurance, and that's completely normal. Your session is planned around your baby, not the other way around.

We'll take breaks whenever needed, allowing you time to settle your little one without feeling rushed. There's no expectation for your baby to sleep throughout the session or behave in a particular way.

You don't need to arrive with a perfectly settled baby. You just need to bring your little one, and we'll take things as they come.

What if the weather is too cold, windy or rainy?

Because I photograph newborns outdoors, the weather is an important part of planning your session.

We'll choose a suitable time and location, taking the conditions into account to help keep your baby comfortable. If the weather isn't appropriate for a newborn session, we'll look at rearranging for another day.

There is no pressure to go ahead if conditions aren't right. I'd much rather find a better day than compromise on your baby's comfort.

Will my newborn photographs look like traditional studio portraits?

My approach is a little different from traditional studio newborn photography.

I still create beautiful portraits of your baby on their own, using a basket and soft blankets, and I pay particular attention to those tiny details you'll want to remember. However, rather than focusing on elaborate poses or elaborate studio setups, I keep things simple and natural.

Alongside your baby's individual portraits, we'll also create photographs of you together as a family, surrounded by the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside.

The result is a gallery that combines carefully considered newborn portraits with natural family photographs, capturing both what your baby looked like and what life felt like when you first welcomed them into your family.

What if I'm feeling tired or not quite myself after giving birth?

Please don't feel that you need to look or feel a certain way to have newborn photographs taken.

Those first few weeks can be wonderful, exhausting, emotional and completely overwhelming, sometimes all at once. There's no expectation for you to have everything figured out or to feel camera-ready.

We'll plan the session around how you're feeling, take things at a comfortable pace and make sure there's time for breaks. If you need a little longer before you're ready, that's absolutely fine too.

These photographs are about celebrating your family as you are, not expecting you to be anything other than yourselves.
